Shahadah in Islam is the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and the first pillar of Islam. It is the declaration that asserts belief in Allah as the only one worthy of worship and accepts Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as His final messenger.
The Shahadah is more than just a statement said aloud; it is a lifelong commitment that defines a Muslim’s beliefs, worship, and everyday actions. Furthermore, it is constantly repeated throughout a Muslim’s day, being a core part of the Adhan (call to prayer) and the Tashahhud during daily prayers.

What Is Shahadah in Islam?
The term “shahadah” means “testimony” or “witness.” In Islamic terminology, it translates to the declaration.
“La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasul Allah.”
This translates as:
“There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
This simple but powerful statement conveys the heart of Islamic belief. The Shahadah asserts monotheism and accepts Prophet Muhammad as Allah’s final messenger.
The Exact Words of the Shahadah
Arabic Text:
أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا رسول الله
Transliteration:
Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah.
English Meaning:
“I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
These words reflect the heart of Islamic faith and summarize the Creator’s connection with His creation.
Historical Background of Shahadah
All of Allah’s prophets conveyed the message of the Shahadah. From Prophet Adam until Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, all messengers urged people to worship only Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ conveyed this message for twenty-three years. His aim was to guide humanity away from idol worship and toward real devotion to Allah. His teachings transformed the Shahadah into the Muslim community’s defining declaration.
Shahadah as the First Pillar of Islam
Islam is based on five pillars, the first among them is the Shahadah, which is the foundation for all acts of worship.
Prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage lose their spiritual value without an honest conviction in the Shahadah. Faith precedes action, making the Shahadah the foundation of Islamic practice.
The Meaning of the First Part of Shahadah
The first part of Shahadah in Islam is:
“Ashhadu An La Ilaha Illa Allah”
Meaning:
“I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.”
This powerful declaration contains two important elements:
1. Rejecting False Worship
A Muslim confesses that nothing other than Allah is worthy of worship. This includes rejecting devotion to idols, wealth, status, personal desires, and all created beings.
2. Affirming the Worship of Allah Alone
The declaration states firmly that Allah alone deserves worship, obedience, trust, love, and complete devotion.
This idea is the foundation for Tawhid, the Islamic concept of Allah’s absolute oneness and uniqueness.
The Meaning of the Second Part of Shahadah
The second part of Shahadah in Islam states:
“Ashhadu Anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah”
Meaning:
“I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
This declaration affirms that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was chosen by Allah to convey His final message to humanity and serve as the last prophet and messenger.
Accepting this testimony means:
- Following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
- Respecting and adhering to his teachings.
- Obeying the guidance revealed through him.
- Applying Islamic values and principles in daily life.
Belief in Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and following his example completes the testimony of faith and reflects a sincere commitment to Islam.
The Core Concept of Tawhid in Shahadah
Tawhid is core to the meaning and idea of Shahadah in Islam .
Tawhid teaches that Allah is unique in:
-
Lordship
Allah created, sustains, and governs the entire universe.
-
Worship
Only Allah deserves devotion.
-
Names and Attributes
Allah has perfect names and traits, unlike any of His creations.
This belief provides life’s meaning, direction, and clarity.

Shahadah and the Quran
Regarding the testimony of “La ilaha illa Allah” (There is no deity except Allah) in the Quran, Allah Almighty says:
So know (O Muhammad SAW) that La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.. [surah Muhammad :19]
And He Almighty says:
Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. La ilah illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [surah Al Imran: 18]
As for the testimony of “Muhammad rasoolu Allah” (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah) in the Quran, Allah Almighty says:
Say (O Muhammad SAW): “O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah – to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He); It is He Who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad SAW) who believes in Allah and His Words [(this Quran), the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and also Allah’s Word: “Be!” – and he was, i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary)], and follow him so that you may be guided.” [surah Al-Araf: 158]
Shahadah and the Sunnah
Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “I have been commanded to fight against the people till they testify La ilaha illAllah (There is no true god except Allah) and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His slave and Messenger, and to establish As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and to pay Zakat; and if they do this, then their blood and property are secured except by the rights of Islam, and their accountability is left to Allah.” [Al- Bukhari and Muslim].
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
The Prophet (ﷺ) sent Mu`adh to Yemen and said, “Invite the people to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and I am Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), and if they obey you to do so, then teach them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in every day and night (in twenty-four hours), and if they obey you to do so, then teach them that Allah has made it obligatory for them to pay the Zakat from their property and it is to be taken from the wealthy among them and given to the poor.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 1395].
