Benefits of Surah Al-Mulk: What Authentic Hadith & Scholars Say

Every night, millions of Muslims close their day with thirty short verses. They do it because the Prophet ﷺ never slept without them. Yet many people repeat claims about this surah that have no authentic source.

This guide separates the proven from the popular. You will learn the benefits of Surah Al-Mulk as they appear in authentic hadith, what classical and modern scholars say, the best time to recite it, and a simple plan to memorize it.

Throughout the article, Quranic verses and hadith appear in Arabic with their English meaning so you can see the evidence yourself. Our goal at Miftah Al-Huda Academy is simple: help you read, understand, and live the Quran with confidence.

What Is Surah Al-Mulk About?

Surah Al-Mulk is the 67th chapter of the Quran. It has 30 ayahs and opens Juz 29, which is why that juz is often called “Juz Tabarak.” It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Hijrah.

“Al-Mulk” means “The Dominion” or “The Sovereignty.” The surah is also known as Tabarak, after its first word, and as Al-Mani’ah (“The Protector”) and Al-Munjiyah (“The Rescuer”), names that point to its role in protecting the believer from the punishment of the grave.

The opening verses set the tone for everything that follows:

تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ﴿١﴾ الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفُورُ ﴿٢﴾

“Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and He is over all things competent. He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:1–2)

Why Was Surah Al-Mulk Revealed?

No single incident is reported as the cause of its revelation. Like most Makki surahs, it was revealed to answer the core questions the Quraysh were rejecting: Who owns this universe? Will we be resurrected? Is there real accountability?

The surah answers through signs anyone can see: the flawless sky, birds held in the air, the earth made easy to walk on, and the water we cannot produce ourselves. It then shows the regret of the people of the Fire, who admit they never truly listened or reflected.

Benefits of Surah Al-Mulk in Authentic Hadith

The benefits of Surah Al-Mulk rest on a small number of narrations that scholars of hadith have graded as authentic (sahih) or good (hasan). Here they are, with their sources and gradings.

1. It Intercedes for Its Reciter Until He Is Forgiven

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “There is a surah in the Quran of thirty verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is: Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2891, Abu Dawud 1400, Ibn Majah 3786; graded hasan by al-Tirmidhi and al-Albani)

Scholars explain that “interceded” can refer to the past (a man before us was forgiven through it) or to the Day of Judgment. Either way, the lesson is the same: consistent recitation of this surah becomes an advocate for you before Allah.

2. It Argues on Behalf of Its Companion Until He Enters Paradise

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A surah of the Quran, only thirty verses, argued on behalf of its companion until it admitted him into Paradise. It is Surah Tabarak.” (Al-Tabarani in al-Mu’jam al-Awsat; graded hasan by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami’ 3644)

The word “companion” (sahib) matters. Scholars note it describes someone who keeps the surah close: reciting it regularly, acting on it, and ideally memorizing it. A one-time reading is not the same as companionship.

3. It Protects From the Punishment of the Grave

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: “Whoever recites Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk every night, Allah will protect him by it from the punishment of the grave. In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to call it Al-Mani’ah (the protector).” (Al-Nasa’i in al-Sunan al-Kubra 10479; graded hasan by al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib 1475)

A related narration states directly:

«سُورَةُ تَبَارَكَ هِيَ الْمَانِعَةُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»

“Surah Tabarak is the protector from the punishment of the grave.” (Al-Hakim; Sahih al-Jami’ 3643)

Although Ibn Mas’ud’s words are his own, scholars treat them as carrying the ruling of a Prophetic statement, since a companion cannot know matters of the unseen through personal opinion.

4. It Was Part of the Prophet’s ﷺ Nightly Routine

Jabir said: “The Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil (Surah As-Sajdah) and Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk (Surah Al-Mulk).” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2892, Musnad Ahmad; graded sahih by al-Albani in al-Silsilah al-Sahihah 585)

This is the clearest guidance on timing. The Sunnah is to make Surah Al-Mulk part of your bedtime routine, and adding Surah As-Sajdah completes the Prophetic practice.

5. The General Reward of Reciting the Quran

Every letter of Surah Al-Mulk also carries the reward promised for all Quran recitation:

«مَنْ قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُ بِهِ حَسَنَةٌ، وَالْحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا»

“Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will receive a good deed, and a good deed is multiplied tenfold.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2910; graded sahih)

«اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّهُ يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ شَفِيعًا لِأَصْحَابِهِ»

“Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions.” (Sahih Muslim 804)

Summary of Authentic Benefits

Benefit Source Grade
Intercedes until its reciter is forgiven Tirmidhi 2891, Abu Dawud 1400 Hasan
Argues for its companion until he enters Paradise Tabarani, al-Awsat Hasan
Protects from the punishment of the grave Nasa’i, al-Kubra 10479 Hasan
Prophet ﷺ recited it every night before sleep Tirmidhi 2892, Ahmad Sahih

Does Surah Al-Mulk Protect From the Punishment of the Grave?

Yes. Based on the narration of Ibn Mas’ud above, scholars agree that regular nightly recitation of Surah Al-Mulk is a means of protection from the punishment of the grave, by Allah’s permission.

The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from its punishment in every prayer, and he taught us to do the same:

«اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1377, Sahih Muslim 588)

What Scholars Say About This Protection

Scholars add three important conditions to understand this benefit correctly:

  • Consistency matters. The narration says “every night” (kulla laylah). The protection is tied to a habit, not a single reading.
  • Recitation is linked to belief and action. A surah cannot protect someone who abandons the obligatory prayers or persists in major sins without repentance. The Quran is a proof for you or against you.
  • It is a means, not a guarantee. Al-Mulk is a cause that Allah has attached to protection. The outcome remains in His hands and depends on His mercy.

Imam al-Qurtubi and others mentioned that the surah protects because its reciter lives with its meanings: fear of Allah unseen, reflection on His creation, and certainty in the resurrection. Allah says in the same surah:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَيْبِ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ

“Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and a great reward.” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:12)

What Does Surah Al-Mulk Protect You From?

Based on the authentic evidence, Surah Al-Mulk is a means of protection from three things: the punishment of the grave, the consequences of sins (through its intercession until forgiveness), and the Fire (as it argues for its companion until he enters Paradise).

Claims that it protects from specific illnesses, poverty, black magic, or worldly problems have no specific authentic text. The Quran in general is healing and mercy, but we should not attach specific worldly promises to Surah Al-Mulk without evidence.

When to Read Surah Al-Mulk: The Best Time According to the Sunnah

The best time to recite Surah Al-Mulk is at night, before you sleep. This follows the practice of the Prophet ﷺ in the hadith of Jabir, and the wording “every night” in the narration of Ibn Mas’ud.

Can I Read Surah Mulk After Maghrib?

Yes. In Islamic law, the night begins at sunset (Maghrib). Scholars therefore explain that reading Surah Al-Mulk any time between Maghrib and Fajr counts as reading it “at night.” Many people recite it after Maghrib or after Isha so they do not miss it if they fall asleep early.

Reading it right before sleep is closest to the Prophet’s ﷺ practice. Reading it after Maghrib is still valid and rewarded.

Why Do We Read Surah Mulk at Night?

Sleep is often described as the “minor death.” Allah says:

“Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die (He takes) during their sleep.” (Surah Az-Zumar 39:42)

It is fitting, then, to end each day with the surah that protects from the punishment of the grave. Every night you rehearse the moment of death and close your day with a reminder of accountability.

What Happens If You Read Surah Mulk Every Night?

Based on the evidence, the consistent reader can hope for:

  1. Following an established Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
  2. Protection from the punishment of the grave, by Allah’s will.
  3. A surah that intercedes and argues for him on the Day of Judgment.
  4. Ten rewards for every letter recited.
  5. A heart that stays connected to Allah’s dominion, mercy, and justice.

What If I Am Awake All Night or Work Night Shifts?

If you do not sleep at night, read it at any point during the night, ideally before you finally rest. If you sleep during the day after a night shift, reading it before that sleep follows the spirit of the Sunnah. If you miss it completely, scholars say you can make it up the next day, as the Prophet ﷺ used to make up missed night worship during the day.

Quick Timing Guide

Situation Recommendation
Normal routine Right before sleep (closest to the Sunnah)
You fall asleep early After Maghrib or after Isha
Night shift worker During the night or before your main sleep
You missed it Make it up the next day
Morning recitation Rewarded as Quran reading, but the “every night” benefit is tied to night

Common Questions on How to Recite Surah Al-Mulk

Can I Listen to Surah Mulk Instead of Reading It?

Listening to the Quran is rewarded. Allah commands attentive listening and links it to His mercy:

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

“So when the Quran is recited, listen to it and pay attention so that you may receive mercy.” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:204)

However, the hadith speak of the one who “reads” (qara’a) the surah. Most scholars, including the scholars of the Standing Committee and IslamQA, explain that the specific benefit of protection is tied to reciting it yourself. Listening earns reward but is not equal to recitation.

If you cannot read Arabic yet, listen while following the text with your eyes and repeating after the reciter. This turns listening into learning, and soon into recitation.

Can You Read Surah Mulk in English?

Reading a translation helps you understand the surah, and understanding is itself an act of worship. But a translation is not the Quran itself. The reward of reciting Quran and the specific benefits of Surah Al-Mulk are tied to the Arabic words revealed to the Prophet ﷺ.

The best approach is to recite in Arabic and read the English meaning alongside it. Transliteration can help as a temporary bridge, but it often leads to pronunciation mistakes, so learning the Arabic letters with a qualified teacher is the safer path.

Is Reading From a Phone Valid?

Yes. Reciting from a phone, app, or printed mushaf all count as recitation. Reciting from memory is even better for building a lasting bond with the surah.

Can We Recite Surah Mulk for the Deceased?

Scholars hold two main views on gifting the reward of Quran recitation to the dead:

  • The majority of Hanafi, Hanbali, and later Shafi’i and Maliki scholars hold that the reward of recitation reaches the deceased if gifted to them, by Allah’s mercy.
  • Others, including a well-known position of Imam al-Shafi’i and many contemporary scholars, hold that it does not reach them, citing the verse “and that there is not for man except that for which he strives” (53:39).

All scholars agree on actions that definitely benefit the deceased, based on this hadith:

«إِذَا مَاتَ الْإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ: إِلَّا مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ»

“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.” (Sahih Muslim 1631)

So the safest and agreed-upon gift is dua, charity, and hajj or umrah on their behalf. Note also that the grave benefit of Surah Al-Mulk is for the one who recited it during their own life. It is a habit you build now for your own grave.

Weak Narrations About Surah Al-Mulk You Should Know

Because Surah Al-Mulk is so beloved, many narrations about it circulate online. Some are weak (da’if) and should not be quoted as the words of the Prophet ﷺ without clarifying their status.

Popular narration Status Note
A companion pitched a tent over a grave and heard a man reciting Al-Mulk inside it Weak Tirmidhi 2890; al-Tirmidhi called it gharib, al-Albani graded it da’if
“I wish it were in the heart of every believer” Weak Reported by al-Hakim; its chain is not authentic
Al-Mulk protects from specific illnesses, debt, or magic No source No authentic text links these to this surah specifically
Fixed counts such as reading it 7, 40, or 100 times for a wish No source Specific numbers for worldly goals are not established

Scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah and al-Nawawi stressed that we should not attribute anything to the Prophet ﷺ unless it is reliably transmitted. The authentic benefits above are more than enough to make Surah Al-Mulk a lifelong companion.

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

«مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ»

“Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 110, Sahih Muslim 3)

This is why learning from qualified teachers matters. A good Quran course does not only teach you to recite. It teaches you which claims are sound.

What Does Surah Al-Mulk Talk About? Key Themes and Lessons

Understanding the meaning multiplies the benefits of Surah Al-Mulk, because the surah was revealed to be reflected upon. Here are its main themes.

1. Life Is a Test of Quality, Not Quantity

Verse 2 says Allah created death and life “to test you as to which of you is best in deed.” Al-Fudayl ibn ’Iyad explained “best in deed” as the most sincere and the most correct: done for Allah alone and according to the Sunnah.

2. The Perfection of Allah’s Creation

“Who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see any inconsistency in the creation of the Most Merciful. So return your vision to the sky; do you see any breaks?” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:3)

The surah invites you to look twice at the sky and find no flaw. This trains the believer to see Allah’s power in everyday sights.

3. The Regret of Those Who Refused to Listen

“And they will say: If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze.” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:10)

This verse is a powerful reason to recite with reflection. The people of the Fire did not lack ears or minds. They lacked the will to use them for truth.

4. Allah Knows the Secrets of Hearts

“And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:13–14)

5. Seek Provision, But Remember the Return

“It is He who made the earth tame for you, so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision, and to Him is the resurrection.” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:15)

Islam encourages work and effort, while reminding us that every step ends in the meeting with Allah.

6. Only Allah Sustains

“Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and folding? None holds them up except the Most Merciful.” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:19)

“Say: Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken into the earth, then who could bring you flowing water?” (Surah Al-Mulk 67:30)

The surah ends with a question that silences arrogance. Every sip of water is a gift we cannot produce ourselves.

Why Surah Al-Mulk Is So Important

Put together, these themes explain why scholars consider Surah Al-Mulk one of the most important surahs to memorize. In 30 verses it covers Allah’s sovereignty, the purpose of life as a test, the Hereafter, sincerity, and gratitude, and it carries authentic promises of protection and intercession.

Ya Malik al-Mulk: Meaning and Benefits

“Malik al-Mulk” (مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ) means “Owner of All Sovereignty.” It shares its root with the name of Surah Al-Mulk and appears in this verse:

قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ تُؤْتِي الْمُلْكَ مَن تَشَاءُ وَتَنزِعُ الْمُلْكَ مِمَّن تَشَاءُ وَتُعِزُّ مَن تَشَاءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشَاءُ ۖ بِيَدِكَ الْخَيْرُ ۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

“Say: O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.” (Surah Aal ’Imran 3:26)

Allah commands us to call on Him by His beautiful names:

وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

“And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:180)

Authentic Benefits of Calling on Ya Malik al-Mulk

  • It strengthens tawakkul: whoever knows that all authority belongs to Allah stops fearing people.
  • It is an ideal name to call upon when asking for honor, guidance in leadership, justice, or relief from oppression.
  • Reciting Aal ’Imran 3:26 in dua matches the name to the need, which is the Quranic way of making dua.

What About “Ya Malik al-Mulk Wazifa” Counts?

You may find claims like “recite Ya Malik al-Mulk 100 times to win a court case” or “for wealth after Fajr.” There is no authentic hadith that assigns specific numbers or guaranteed worldly results to this name. Calling on Allah by this name is excellent at any time. Fixed formulas presented as guaranteed should be avoided, as scholars of IslamQA and Dar al-Ifta note. The same applies to similar claims about names like Ya Malik, Ya Quddus, and Ya Mutakabbir.

How to Memorize Surah Al-Mulk Fast: A 10-Day Plan

Memorizing the surah makes you its true “companion,” the word used in the hadith of Anas. Allah promised the Quran is easy to remember:

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

“And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (Surah Al-Qamar 54:17)

Step-by-Step Method

  1. Purify your intention. Memorize to please Allah and to protect yourself in the grave.
  2. Correct your recitation first. Recite the verses to a teacher before memorizing, so you do not lock mistakes into memory.
  3. Listen on repeat. Pick one clear reciter (such as Al-Husary or Al-Minshawi) and listen to your daily portion 10 times.
  4. Learn the meaning. Read the English translation of each verse. Understood verses stick faster.
  5. Use the 3-verse rule. Memorize three verses per day. Repeat each verse 10 times looking, then 10 times from memory.
  6. Link the verses. Recite yesterday’s verses and today’s together, so the surah grows as one chain.
  7. Recite in prayer. Use your new verses in Sunnah and night prayers. This is the strongest revision tool.
  8. Recite it nightly. Once memorized, make it your bedtime recitation forever.

Sample 10-Day Schedule

1 1–3 Allah’s dominion and the test of life
2 4–6 The sky, the lamps, and the devils

8 22–24 Guidance, hearing, sight, and hearts

The Prophet ﷺ gave hope to every learner, even those who struggle:

«الْمَاهِرُ بِالْقُرْآنِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَةِ، وَالَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَتَتَعْتَعُ فِيهِ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ شَاقٌّ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ»

“The one who is skilled in the Quran will be with the noble, righteous scribes (angels), and the one who recites the Quran and stumbles over it, finding it difficult, will have a double reward.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4937, Sahih Muslim 798)
